Words Change Lives (An Essay About The Three Most Important Texts From Senior English B)

984 words - 4 pages

In Senior English B, we read a lot of texts with really deep messages. So much wisdom is packed into that textbook. So many masterpieces are compiled in those books for us to read and learn from. To me, poetry is one of the most powerful types of literature. Something about rhythm and rhyme gives words so much more weight than they do when arranged in ways without any poetic qualities. Poetry is one of my favorite things in the world, and though they may not realize it, I think many other people are in the same boat. Lyrical poetry, like that found in many songs, is the best. Second, “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” also moved me. It’s amazing for one poem to be so influential on our culture. Thousands of books, films, and TV shows have this one poem to thank for their creation. When I read something like that, I can almost feel the sheer hugeness of it. This is it. This is the poem that brought about the idea that things can die, and become undead. It also has an extremely important message. We, as mere humans, were created and are loved by God, the same God that created and loves everything. Who are we to take our surroundings for granted? Who are we to think that we are better than anything else that creeps and crawls around this planet we call our home?
Finally, T.S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Men” is one of the most important poems I have ever read, or ever will read. Over a hundred years ago, Eliot could see which way society was headed. People are turning hollow. There is no weight or substance to us anymore. We are only images, and our voices are nothing but the noises of the wind in the desert. Our words have no meaning. They are just noises. Everything we do is in vain. I find it interesting that the final lines are, “This is how the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper.” This is exactly what Dylan Thomas means when he says “Rage against the dying of the light.” It’s so sad for something to just fade away. It shows that no one really cares anymore. It completely nullifies any feeling that anything that ever happened within the life of that thing ever had any significance. T.S. Eliot saw that when the world ends, if we...
