1010 words - 4 pages

Words That Make You ThinkThere are many words in the American language that make you think of specific images or thoughts. What one person thinks of when they hear a word may be completely different from what another person thinks of when hearing the same word. Depression is the one word that makes me think of many different definitions. There are many ways that depression can be defined and a few of them are a state of mind, a time when the economy was low, a dent or shallow place, and a type of surgery done on the eyes. One of the definitions of Depression is "an act of depressing or state of feeling sad; a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies; a reduction in activity, amount, quality, or force; a lowering of vitality or functional activity." (www.dictionary.com) There are more than 18 million adult Americans' that suffer from one form or another of a depressive disorder every year, which is a distressing 9.5 percent of the American population. There are many different types of mood disorders, out of all of the disorder's depression is the most common, and unfortunately the most misunderstood disorder. Some of the symptoms of this disorder are loss of appetite and loss of interest in normal activity. Even though the majority of research shows that brain chemical imbalances do cause this condition, there are still many people who believe that chronic depression is a sign of a week personality or some major character flaw. This fact alone can make seeking help very difficult, as many people hesitate to admit this type of "weakness" to their family, friends and doctors. It is hard to imagine the suffering and damage that would happen if that amount of people had a major illness such as AIDS or cancer from the world. That is only one of the definitions of depression and it is probably the most common thought of definition, but if anyone thinks past that one they would probably think of "a period of low general economic activity marked especially by rising levels of unemployment" (www.dictionary.com) as the very next definition to depression. That was a very hard time for people; they were living in a time when so many things were rationed such as food and gas. That was a time of great suffering and also a time when families pulled together to get through one of the worst times a family will face. It was a struggle to provide enough food and to keep a shelter for everyone. There was a shortage in many different types of products such as food, fabric and gas. There were also many families that ended up homeless or living with other family just to survive. "In 1932, evictions occurred in New York City at two to three times pre-Depression levels, vacancy rates in some low-income...
