Workplace Observation Essay

799 words - 3 pages

The workplace has created an excellent environment for new ideas and thoughts to be created and developed. The observable aspects of an organization's culture can be understood through the following precepts: communication, diversity, dress and language, and artifacts. It has been stated that "if information is the lifeblood of any organization" then the communications systems in place could be classed as the arteries and veins of the organization. The author has been able to observe, through the luxury of his position as an Automotive Sales Consultant at Coggin Chevrolet, many of the operations and processes in all departments. Communication at Coggin Chevrolet consists of emails, payroll attachments, meetings, and postings on bulletin boards at strategic locations, i.e. break and conference rooms. Payroll attachments, mainly consisting of information regarding employee morale, benefits and payroll information, are provided for those team members that do not have regular access to the email system. These attachments are usually provided, in the case of employee events or benefit changes, at least two to four weeks prior to the date provided. Supervisors and team members are required to sign a statement that all team members have been provided with the attachments. In addition to email, payroll attachments and postings on the bulletin board there are manager's meetings that are held daily and sales meetings held twice weekly on Monday and Saturday. The success of the author's organization depends on the effectiveness of its people in working together, supporting common goals and understanding critical issues. There are many factors that create diversity in the workplace. Diversity can be a positive trait of a company or can cause workplace dilemma. Diversity is human qualities that are different from our own and outside the groups, to which we belong, yet are present in other individuals and groups (Schermerhorn, 2003, pg. 13). At Coggin Chevrolet, diversity is present in abundance. Some of the factors that create diversity are: age, gender, values and religion. At this company all the different factors of diversity are present and all are embraced and accepted. The author has observed that all employees have respect for each other and everyone is perceived as an equal. This allows the managing of the diversity present in our workplace to be unproblematic. The main factor that creates diversity at Coggin Chevrolet is age. There are employees that range from the youngest at 21 years to the oldest of 63 years. I...
