The nursing profession is a highly structured profession, which is governed by a variety of

bureaucratic entities. These governing bodies regulate and enforce strict behavioral standards

providing challenging and substantial workloads for the registered nurse. In an environment

where your decision making follows best practice, facility protocol, and tried and true

algorithms, and even you dress and appearance has to fall within the company standard, it is easy

to see how a foundation for lateral violence can exist. Lateral violence is more commonly known

as workplace bullying. Lateral violence encompasses three categories: harassment,

discrimination, and bullying (Pontus, 2011). This workplace violence is not only negative, but

disrupts and creates disturbance of the work flow. It effects the process of patient care, teamwork, and the bottom line of the healthcare facility. Bullying is abusive conduct that includes threats, humiliation, intimidation, sabotage, work interference, as well as physical and verbal abuse. (Namie, PhD, Christiansen, & Phillips, 2014). This behavior is motivated by the perpetrator’s desire or need to control the recipient. The perpetrator selects their target and the method of bullying. This behavior includes what is done to the victim by the commission of the act or by omission, which includes withholding assistance and knowledge that affects performance. People often try to avoid or ignore the evidence of bullying. It is unfortunate that sometimes the activity escalates as other nurses are drawn into the fray. For some nurses bullying happens at the start of their careers, when they are new nurses in orientation. It is possible that some times the older, experienced nurse mentor believes that by being hard on the novice nurse, that she will assist the nurse in becoming a strong competent professional. This aggression is detrimental to mentoring and guiding new graduate nurses into becoming competent healthcare professionals. These new novice nurses are at their most vulnerable. New nurses are full of inquires as they learn new skills and procedures, time management and unit particularities. Novice nurses are just starting to gain competency, autonomy, and self confidence in the healthcare industry. Being a target of lateral violence will undermine progression of the successful transition from new graduate nurse to practicing nurse. As a result of bullying, 60% of new graduates leave their first job within six months due to bullying. A third of new graduates contemplate leaving the profession altogether. Lateral violence within the workplace is comparable to domestic violence. The daily function of the healthcare facility is undermined by these negative activities as they effect team performance and patient care.
