You Know You Love Me, Xoxo Machiavelli

1201 words - 5 pages

Royalty is no longer a characteristic that belongs only to a monarch. In The Prince, Machiavelli targets the prince and all other royalty, but today his work may be used as a social critique of upper class society. Thus a popular television show depicting Manhattan’s elite governed by social media blasts, is no coincidence. It is evident that the creators of the popular television show Gossip Girl had Machiavelli in mind. Machiavelli and Gossip Girl as a whole complement each other in their focus on man’s lack of morals, and their ability to create paranoia as well as persuade others to follow their lead.
Human nature is greedy and self-interested. At least that is what Machiavelli might have said. The television show Gossip Girl, plays on this imperfection of man, through revealing the scandals of New York City’s royalty. “Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite” (“Pilot” 1.1). Each character is solely self-interested in their actions and the character of Gossip Girl feeds on all of their drama. The characters rarely worry about whom they must manipulate in order to get their way, which ultimately shows an overwhelming amount of immoral behavior. Making others see the flaws of Manhattan’s elite through this immoral behavior evokes feelings of vanity. This raises up commoners by making them feel that they have a higher level of integrity than this group of elite. There is always scandal that the elite partake in that would never even apply to the commoners, making the elite’s downfall even heavier: “One thing about being on the top of the world, it gives you a long, long way to fall” (“In The Realm of the Basses” 2.14). On the other hand, competition is created in the elite world, to out others’ scandals in order to keep the spotlight away from themselves. Many may argue that Machiavelli partakes in a similar tactic. Through the publication of The Prince, commoners were led to believe that Machiavelli’s instructions are in fact how the royals were acting. It exposes the apparent trickery of the royal class and creates tension among the people. Much like how the commoners in Gossip Girl may take a greater pride in their integrity because of the elite’s mistakes, the commoners reading The Prince most likely felt the same way.
Gossip Girl and Machiavelli create paranoia through their instructions and tips. “Did B think S would go down without a fight? Or can these two hotties work it out? There is nothing Gossip Girl likes more than a good catfight” (“Pilot” 1.1). Machiavelli likes “a good catfight” as well, which he shows through his emphasis on the prince’s duty in Military matters. “Nor must he take anything as his profession but war, its institution, and its discipline, because that is the only profession which befits one who commands” (The Prince para. 1). In both works, there is this over emphasis on fighting, placing importance on being in an eternal state of war. “Every great leader knows,...
