You Make The World A Better Place By Making Yourself A Better Person

1165 words - 5 pages

“You make the world a better place by making yourself a better person,” was once said by a man named Scott Sorrell. In today’s modern world and age, everything seems to be progressing and getting larger at a mind blowing rate. This includes people’s attitudes on themselves, on other people, and on the world in general. Many people are insecure and spiteful towards their physique or their overall worth, and bitter and disconnected from other people. Scott Sorrell’s quote is conveying that one can make the world a better place both for themselves and for other people simply by changing their attitude and being positive. I agree with Scott Sorrell’s quote because by choosing to be happy from within, people’s positive attitudes can reach other people and eventually the world, making it a “better place”.
There are many ways in which people embody Sorrell’s quote by being positive with themselves or other people. One such person is American actress Jennifer Lawrence. Many people know Jennifer Lawrence by her brilliant acting of Katniss Everdeen on The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, and Rosalyn Rosenfield in American Hustle. However, they also know of Lawrence’s acceptance towards her body. Nowadays, more and more celebrities are obsessed with losing weight and being thin. Photoshopping and airbrushing makes them look even more toned and lean in magazines and on television. These seemingly perfect celebrities are encouraging other people to look like them as well, going to unhealthy measures to do it. On the other hand, Jennifer Lawrence has a completely different attitude on her body. Instead of striving to be perfect, she chooses to be content with who she is. “What are you gonna do? Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That’s just dumb,” she says, with a little hint of truth behind her humor. Jennifer Lawrence has a positive attitude towards herself, and in the process she is also spreading the message of body positivity and the fact that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. In conclusion, Jennifer Lawrence has made herself a role model for others, and has also bettered the world by having a positive attitude about her physique.
Another example of a girl who depicts Scott Sorrell’s quote is Talia Joy Castellano. She was diagnosed with two forms of cancer when she was only six years old; neuroblastoma and leukemia, making her battle with cancer even harder than most. She has to get constant surgeries and treatments done, and even with the chemotherapy, she is suffering through a great deal of pain. Yet, she does makeup tutorials on YouTube and has a bubbly, cheerful attitude that is infectious even through a screen. Even though she was only thirteen years old when she passed away, she inspired millions of people around the world to just keep swimming and embrace their dreams even if the odds are against them. Talia Joy Castellano had to fight cancer, and was left with only a few years to live after she was diagnosed. Despite...
