The youth of our country are capable of many accomplishments. These range from outstanding community service to committing indictable offences. Today young people are fortunate enough to have similar privileges as adults such as driving/ operating countless types of vehicles, being left to take responsibility for children (babysitting) and themselves. With all of these privileges and responsibilities that youth gladly undertake, they should be required to accept appropriate consequences for their actions. Young persons who commit murder should be tried as adults.
One common misconception is that many people argue that Youth deserve a second chance when committing offences. However, if the consequences were more severe, or enforced the 1st time, more youth would think twice before committing offences repeatedly. The Youth Criminal Justice Act states that, Canadian society should have a youth criminal justice system that commands respect, takes into account the interests of victims, fosters responsibility and ensures accountability through meaningful consequences. (Page 1851 2008 Martin’s Annual Criminal Codes Police edition) So it is our civil responsibility to make sure the young offenders are disciplined properly the first time they commit a crime so that it could deter them from repeating the offences. Most families of victims want more harsh punishments and sentencing for brutal crimes committed. When taking into account the mental emotional scars left on the entire family it would only make sense to inflict a harsher punishment to prevent reoccurrence. Information in the article “Crusade for justice” indicates a distraught father’s crusade to get more severe punishments for young people that commit indictable offences such as the one against his child.
