In many heroic tales we see extraordinary changes in the hero’s character as the story progresses. Many of the changes that are seen are small and subtle and are failed to be seen as significant moments. This also holds true for The Epic of Gilgamesh. There are tiny moments in this tale like the shedding of clothes that may be overlooked at first but when analyzed afterwards show a great significance in the course of the tale. In The Epic of Gilgamesh the shedding and donning of clothes is very important because it shows the change in Enkidu and Gilgamesh’s fundamental character as evidenced in Enkidu’s change from wild to civilized and Gilgamesh’s change from exploitive, impulsive king to ...view middle of the document...

The clothing represents civility that changes the fundamental character of Enkidu and without this change the rest of the epic would not have occurred the way it did.
In a similar manner, the shedding and donning of clothing is significant in the story for Gilgamesh because it points to the taming of Gilgamesh’s character as he becomes a wise leader from the impulsive king he is at the beginning. Gilgamesh at the beginning of the story is an exploitive, impulsive king that the people of Uruk hate (The Epic of Gilgamesh I 80-93). However after Enkidu’s death, Gilgamesh’s fundamental character changes and the clothes help show that. When Gilgamesh rips of his clothes and embraces the lion’s skin as the new clothing he becomes barren searching for the answer of immortality in the wild because he fears death (The Epic of Gilgamesh IX 5). Without his kingly robes the scorpion men. Shiduri, Ur-Shanabi and Uta-napishti all see the barren side of Gilgamesh where sorrow, anger and fear reside. The clothes he wears point to an uncivil side of Gilgamesh. However at the end of this journey when Gilgamesh receives the great knowledge he is looking for from Uta-nipishti and sees that immortality is out of reach for him, he changes once again...
