Your Mind Can Fool You Essay

“‘Percy, we're going to Polyphemus' island! Polyphemus is an S-i-k...a C-y-k...’ She stamped her foot in frustration. As smart as she was, Annabeth was dyslexic, too. We could've been there all night while she tried to spell Cyclops. ‘You know what I mean!’” Annabeth Chase; a character in Percy Jackson and the Olympians is constantly called the smartest character throughout multiple books and series written by Rick Riordan about Percy Jackson and his adventures, and just like many other intelligent and famous people suffers from dyslexia. Yet even though she is diagnosed with a learning disability she does not let that define her. Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison also do not let that define who they are or who they become. Although I have never been diagnosed with dyslexia or dysgraphia, I have an idea of how those effected by dyslexia feel because of a simulation which mimics the disability. Because of the simulation I learned many different life lessons which include perseverance, to not pity those who struggle, and to place myself in someone else’s shoes before I judge them.
To begin with, in the dyslexia simulation I truly understood what struggling felt like, and I realized in order to complete the goal asked of the class I could not give into the temptation of quitting, I had to persevere. In the short story Flowers for Algernon, the main character suffers from an unrevealed disability, yet Miss Kinnian his night school teacher proclaims that he wants to learn to read and write more than most highly intelligent people. This bit of information alongside an anecdote which tells of how he discovered the night school demonstrates how important perseverance is in all situations whether ideal or not. I am able to apply this ability to my daily life by not only continuing to work hard, but to do better than what I except myself to do. When I attempt to persevere I do not give in to laziness, or lack of motivation. Perseverance is the continuous attempt to not give up and to complete a goal. The simulation also taught me that I should persevere in helping those that struggle as well. The simulation has not only taught me valuable skills to apply to myself, but to others as well.
The ability to not pity someone who is suffering from a disability, also was revealed to me in the simulation. I struggled with the activity with and without the mirror, and the one interaction that I dreaded was someone pitying me for my struggle. That resulted in a change of mind of how I have and should treat people of all stations and backgrounds. After this simulation I...
