More than three thousand skilled laborers worked for two years to complete the world's largest, man-made moving object. This was the Titanic. While she ship was deemed 'unsinkable' and a magnificent achievement for the, fairly new, 20th century, it had its flaws. This realization was made obvious when the ship blantaly sank. However, most people focus on the irony and tragedy of the sinking rather than the actual reasoning behind it and what lesson we can take from the event. While technology has advanced and engineering has been modified within the years, there are still lessons to be learned from this single contretemps.
In 1907, Lord Pirrie and Bruce Ismay got together and began the design of the world's largest ship of its time. After doing so large team of engineers and designers began drawing blueprints. The team was led by Lord Pirrie's brother-in-law Alexander Carlisle, Harland & Wolff's general manager. The design was shown to Bruce Ismay and White Star on July 29,1908. He vigorously accepted and signed the contract with Harland & Wolf and they began construction. The original design was to compete two other ships by a competing ship yard.
The titanic's hull was made up of 2,000 single pieces of rolled out steel. The steel was mainly 6 feet wide and 30 feet long. The rolled pieces of steel weighed between 2.5 and 3 tons. Steel welding was still in its beginning stages so the plates were held together with over three million steel and iron rivets. The rivets weighed over 1,200 tons. They were put in place by a machine and were hammered in by hand. The Titanic had two reciprocating four-cylinder,triple-expansion steam engines and a low-pressure Parsons turbine.
