Youth Volunteer Scholarship Essay

716 words - 3 pages

Volunteering is truly an amazing experience that I recommend each individual to do in their life during their spare time because it could benefit you with developing new skills and help others in their life. So far in my high school career, I have volunteered for many different organizations and some of those organizations helped other people. I have enjoyed volunteering very much and the ones that have changed my life and helped me become the person who I am right now are volunteering at the Longmont Public Library, St.vrain Habitat for Humanity, and packing food for homeless people at my church.
I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at the Longmont Public Library; at the library I helped kids with crafts, helped the librarians put the book back in their original shelves, and also read books to kids. Through helping kids with crafts I learned how to interact with people of different ages. This activity helped me increase my patience because kids are kids; they ask a lot of questions and also a lot of help. After answering their questions and helping them, they were very happy and left the room with a joy in their faces like they achieved something big. Through that activity, I learned how to have fun with kids and also how to make them happy and satisfied. Through this skill, I learned that I could one day become a pediatrician. Next, during this volunteering, I also read books to children. Treasure Island enthralled them, and I was thrilled when they asked for “More, please”! They quickly learned it was okay to ask questions (they were most interested in whether Johnny Depp was a real pirate!), and I learned how to laugh and have fun with six-year-olds—which will again help me in my future role as a pediatrician. Overall, throughout this activity, I learned how much fun is to spend your time helping and reading books to kids and also that this will lead me to a very patient person, a kind person, and also a person who likes to help other people.
