Waste has been cataloged as a discrepancy within the system. This means that generators of wastes have created and designed a series of mistaken processes. According to Connet (n.d.), “Waste is the evidence that we are doing something wrong” (p. 1). Therefore, there is more beyond the concept of waste and its generation. It is not only the approach of how to dispose the waste or how to develop modern advance technologies that at some extent diminish wastes, but to reduce the levels of consumerism and to develop a closed loop as in electrical engineering, where the current (wastes) is not allow to move outside the loop. Each activity developed and performed by industries or overall human activities generates large quantities of solid waste, air pollution, water pollution, resource depletion, and many other environmental damages that at the long- run might not be retrievable.
Consumption, according to Connet (n.d.), “is the ultimate driver of this whole linear process” (p. 2). Therefore, there is the need to introduce a concept that rises awareness towards consumism and provides framework regarding moving from the waste concept to visualization it as a resource. This concept is called the “Zero Waste” approach. According to Zaman and Lehman (2012), “Zero waste means designing and managing products and processes systematically to avoid and eliminate waste, and to recover all resources from the waste stream” (p 124). Moreover, Lehman (2010) states that “the concept of “zero waste” directly challenges the common assumption that waste is unavoidable and has no value by focusing on waste as a “misallocated resource” that has to be recovered” (p. 28). This concept aims to the elimination of the waste not by using traditional methods under compliance stages as disposal in landfills, incineration, etc. Zero Waste mostly focus its framework on a life cycle dependence and close loop systems or circular systems. Basically, the main target of the zero waste approach looks forward design for elimination, in which wastes are not generated at any stage of a procedure or activity. The concept looks even more in depth on moving beyond recycling concepts to a stage that a close loop is generated, in which wastes are not longer considered as a waste but as a material or resource. According to Zaman and Lehman (2012), “The scope of zero waste comprises many concepts that have been developed for sustainable waste management systems, including avoiding, reducing, reusing, redesigning, regenerating, recycling, repairing, remanufacturing, reselling, and re-distributing waste resources” (p. 124).
As moving towards “end of pipe” measurements, zero waste is not limited, as mentioned above, only to recycling initiatives, but most importantly to the design stage of products. Zero Waste efforts are allocated to generated a design in which products life cycle is not limited to usage and then disposal. According to Zama and Lehman (2012), “It not only encourages recycling of products but also aims to restructure their design, production, and distribution to prevent waste emerging in the first place” (p. 124). This concept as discussed previously, even targets recycling as not as an 100 percent solution to eliminate waste. According to Lehman (2010), “Recycling itself is inefficient in solving the problem as it does not deliver the necessary “decoupling” of economic development from the depletion of non-renewable raw materials” (p. 29).
