Writing Guide: Writing a Narrative Essay

What's a narrative essay?

One might think of it as telling a story when composing a narrative essay. These essays are generally anecdotal, experiential, and private—letting pupils to express themselves in a transferring, creative and, fairly frequently manners.

Here are a few guidelines for writing a narrative essay:

The essay should contain all the parts of a narrative if composed as a narrative

What this means is you have to include an introduction, plot, characters, setting, climax, and ending.

When would a narrative essay not be composed as a storyline?

An excellent example of this is when an instructor requests a pupil to compose a book report. Clearly, this would focus on supplying an educational narrative for the reader and wouldn't follow the pattern of a storyline.

The essay should have a goal

Make a point! Think of this as the dissertation of your narrative. Why narrate it in the slightest if there isn't any point to what you're narrating?

The essay should be composed from a clear perspective

It's fairly common for narrative essays to be written from the point of view of the writer; yet, this isn't the exclusive view to be contemplated. Imagination in narrative essays frequently times shows itself in the kind of authorial viewpoint.

Use language that is clear and concise through the essay

Like the essay that is illustrative, narrative essays are selected, and powerful when the language is attentively, especially. Use special language to evoke particular emotions and perceptions in the reader.

Using the first person pronoun “I” is welcomed

Don't abuse this guideline! Though it's welcomed it's not needed—nor should it be overused for deficiency of diction that is clearer.

As always, be organized!

Have a clear introduction that establishes the tone for the rest of the essay. Don't leave the reader guessing about the intent of your story. Recall, you're in management of the essay, so direct it where you want (just make certain your audience can follow your lead).
