We just leveled-up Brightkite badges

July 19th, 2010

We’re always looking for ways to make Brightkite more fun and rewarding. We introduced badges earlier in the year through our partnership with Starbucks, but we just took them several steps further.

Brightkite badges now have levels. Take the Slick pic badge – you need to post 10 photos to Brightkite to earn this badge. Once you start, you can monitor your progress in the status bar on the badge. You can see this on the web or your iPhone.

Once you get to level 1, you’ll find out how to get to level 2, and so on. The idea is that its fun to be rewarded for what you do, and your friends can quickly see the things that interest you.

The biggest reason to introduce levels to our badges was so stores, bars, restaurants and brands have a way to reward you, their customers. We think a business should reward all their loyal customers, not just one person. Expect to see a range of branded badges that are both fun to earn and also give you real world rewards as you hit different levels. Think of this like an airlines reward program – if you fly enough you get better seats and free flights – when you reach the right levels with our branded badges, those brands are going to reward you.

We are launching with a few new partners this week:

Sharpie have their own badge that you receive for checking in at stores that sell Sharpie products. Each time to do this you get entered into a sweeps to win $1,000!

Dentyne is sponsoring our social swagger badge – the more ‘social’ things you do in Brightkite, the more you can level up, giving you swagger bragging rights over your mates, and giving you a warm feeling inside.

Redbook . We will be offering a series of badges in conjunction with our partner Redbook magazine. See the August edition of the magazine for more details.

We are working on a bunch more branded badge programs at the moment including McDonald’s, Visa and the CW – more on those as they launch in the next few weeks. We also have a bunch of our own home-grown badges live and plenty more to follow. Have fun finding them and leveling up!

We’d love to hear your feedback on the new badges, especially if you have ideas for badges you’d like to earn.

Congrats. Badges are a smart idea even if Brightkite is not the first to use it... ;)

Surprised when I suddenly got a badge. As someone living outside the US, I hope there’s more activity oriented badges coming. But please keep away from the “Major” type used in Foursquare.

Actually… make it feels like Badges are afterthought after a “location based service to interact with peoples around”, a Bonus instead of Competition and promote the service into a Facebook for peoples close by instead of friends. :D
